Resistor color coding color coding is a method used to indicate the resistive value tolerance and temperature coefficient of resistors with low wattage rating because of their small size.

Tolerance in resistor color code. Color bands are used because they can be easily and cheaply printed on a small electronic component. The colored bands on the resistors denote the value of resistance in resistor tolerance and sometimes temperature coefficient. In the example on the left these bands are green blue red and gold.

For example look at the resistor shown in figure 7. In case of 5 band and 6 band resistors the 5 th band code is used for tolerance. The resistor has four color bands.

These bands are numbered as shown in the figure. The value is thus 56100 5600 w. To read colored bands on the resistor we need to follow this color code chart.

The golden band means that the resistor has a tolerance of 5. In three band resistor color codes there is no tolerance band so generally 20 are assumed. Later in this section youll be shown how a tolerance of a resistor is indicated.
